Washington D.C. Youth Tour

Due to many concerns resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, Montana Electric Cooperative Association (MECA) has selected not to participate in the 2021 National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. In lieu of the Youth Tour, Beartooth Electric and MECA offers this new scholarship opportunity for Sophomore and Junior member students.
Scholarship Essay Contest
Beartooth Electric Co-op is offering an essay contest for one $1,000 one-time scholarship for future college or trade school education in the state of Montana. To be eligible, students must be current high school sophomores or juniors in the Beartooth Electric service territory, and their parent or guardian must be members of Beartooth Electric Cooperative. Like all Beartooth Electric Co-op scholarships, these awards are funded by unclaimed capital credit dollars which must be used for educational purposes in the state. The top-scored essay will be submitted to the statewide competition for a chance to win an additional $2,500 scholarship sponsored by MECA.
To enter, students need to submit the application and essay in response to the question, “How has reliable electricity benefited you and your community through the COVID-19 pandemic?”
The 2022 competition has ended. The 2023 competition will open in the fall of 2022. Please check back!

Every June, as many as 1,500 high school students from across the country spend a week in the nation’s capital as part of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour. The students are sponsored by electric cooperatives – cooperatives that are committed to educating America’s rural youth about America and the role electric cooperatives play in developing strong rural communities.

Participating in the Youth Tour is an awesome way to learn about this great nation, develop leadership skills, gain a better understanding of electric cooperatives, and make friendships that will last beyond the week!
