Beartooth Electric Cooperative, along with four distribution co-ops and the City of Great Falls, buys power from, and is a member of, Southern Montana Electric Generation and Transmission Cooperative. Southern declared bankruptcy in October of 2011 with $21 million in unsecured debt, an unpaid loan of $85 million to build the Highwood Generation Station, and a contract to buy twice as much electricity as Southern's members used.
